One of Morocco’s four ancient imperial cities, Marrakech is alive with more than 1,000 years of history and a diverse culture of Berber and Arab influences. At the heart of the city is the 11th century medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by a 16km ancient wall and entered via 19 magnificently imposing gates. Weaving through the medieval alleyways of the medina, it’s easy to believe you’ve taken a journey back in time.
Beyond the medina in the Gueliz district, narrow alleyways give way to wide French-style boulevards, revealing a more modern side to the city, one of contemporary art galleries, designer fashion boutiques, chic bars and upscale gastronomy.
Roam further beyond the city’s ancient walls and you can discover more in the way of adventure, whether in the desert of Agafay or on the slopes of the Atlas Mountains that cradle Marrakech.
