ITINERARIES
To help you make the most of your stay, we’ve put together some ideas for uncovering the best sights and experiences in Marrakech.
Jemaa el Fna Square
Experience the city’s central square at its most colourful as darkness falls, when a myriad food stalls and a spectacle of storytellers, acrobats, musicians and snake charmers create a captivating carnival of sights, scents and sounds. While in the medina, take in the impressive sight of Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakech with a 70m-high minaret, and explore its surrounding gardens.
History & Architecture
In many of Marrakech’s historical monuments you’ll also discover the city’s most impressive architectural sights. Built 500 years ago, the Ben Youssef Madrasa was the largest Islamic College in Morocco. This amazing structure boasts intricate carvings and tile work.
The magnificent Saadian Tombs, a final resting place for Saadi royalty, are a masterpiece of fine Moroccan craftwork and architecture, while the Museum of Moroccan Arts, a must-visit for art enthusiasts, occupies a former palace and is a work of beautiful decoration in itself.
Tour of the City Walls
Touring the ramparts that surround the medina gives you a real feel for the majesty of Marrakech. Explore on foot, or in a horse-drawn carriage as the sun begins to set.
Majorelle Garden
Take a break from the bustling medina with a stroll in this enchanting botanical garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle – a lush oasis of exotic plants, trees, pools and streams.
Shopping for Moroccan Treasures
No visit is complete without losing yourself in the chaotic maze of the souks. Visit in the cool of the morning or evening, and be ready to haggle as you navigate alleyways bursting with everything from carpets and lanterns to jewellery and spices.
For Moroccan shopping of a different kind, head to the Gueliz district. Highlights include 33 Rue Majorelle, selling contemporary Moroccan fashion and homeware, and Yahya Creation, a gallery of artisan pieces.
Nature & Adventure
The Atlas Mountains and Agafay Desert make for perfect day trips from Marrakech. Enjoy the silence of the landscape as you hike in the mountain valleys dotted with picturesque Berber villages. Cross the desert dunes by camel, 4-wheel drive or quad bike, each offering a different kind of thrill. Or why not see things from a bird’s-eye view in a hot air balloon. Imagine soaring over the snow-capped mountains at sunrise. Spectacular!
